Well, it has been almost a year since my last post. It has been an exceptionally busy year building and creating a new system of record, working on location, and having a personal life; that finding the right balance has been difficult. A challenge that I have enjoyed, and even been miserable during some periods if I am honest with myself. All is good though and with the way things are going, you will be hearing more and more from me.
In my last post, I talked about Urgency. It is the most important need to have when making a change. We need it in our business to grow and you need it in your life to stay current and relevant.
I read an article recently where a CEO at one of the studios said he had a lot of time. I heard him screaming he loved complacency and lacked urgency. I thought to myself, WOW! he is leading an organization where his company’s business process on one of their most important products is in complete disarray and he is dancing the night away. I don’t wonder why the industry is so behind anymore. Although it is a question that must be asked and answered in order to get these complacent leaders to take action. We are here to fix the problems, take action and risks where industry leaders have been failing to provide relief to our pains in the production world.
Since this journey started with the idea of creating digital solutions that eliminate the duplication of work, and getting an industry to follow we have made considerable progress. By the end of the first quarter in 2019, we will have a complete set of financial tools that give the 99% of the industry who need it most the opportunity to update their business toolbox. Each feature we have built this year serves the industry that doesn’t use accounting software to track their department costs. They don’t need it, but they do need to be digital, with a system that communicates with the producers and accountants on their projects.
People talk about the pace at which production life keeps us moving at an accelerated pace beyond the “normal” life. That may have been true when leading companies used paper technology to communicate and transact business. Today is a much different world because entertainment still uses paper technology in the communication and business process that now has the industry behind and slower than ever.
How would you evaluate a business if the employees had to do a task 5 times every day to get one result? When the same task is done 5 times by various employees to get one result is the business practice simple, effective, and efficient? Would you ask questions to find a solution to the inefficiencies? Would you question the costs of doing business this way? Five times every day to get one result. I have described the current state of business practices on productions in the entertainment industry.
